Located in Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park, Yak and Yeti serves up delicious dishes with an Asian flare. Along with an Asian inspired menu, the restaurant's decor possesses those same Asian influences. The artifacts and decorations around the restaurant are supposed to be from the owner's travels throughout Southeast Asia. The restaurant has a really unique and neat look that fits perfectly in the Animal Kingdom! My family has many memories of escaping the rain and sitting by a window upstairs in Yak and Yeti, watching all the brave, soaked souls determined to experience some magic.
Although Yak and Yeti resides in a Disney theme park, the restaurant is not Disney-owned! Instead, Yak and Yeti is owned by Landry's (the same company as Rainforest Cafe). But, they still have your allergies covered! Simply inform your waiter of your allergies, and he will bring a chef to your table. The chefs that I have encountered have all been accommodating and willing to alter the menu to meet my needs. Additionally, the chef will personally deliver the food to ensure that everything placed in front of you is safe!
Now onto the true star of the show; the food! The restaurant has gluten free soy sauce, so altering most Asian dishes is much easier than one would think!
As an appetizer, my favorite dish is the lettuce cups for two; fun to share and very tasty! The plate includes minced chicken breast with vegetables, bean sprouts, carrots, cilantro, and extra gluten free soy sauce for that salty punch. Also, if you are looking for a healthier option, I would definitely recommend the lettuce cups!
For the main event, you can order a variety of dishes usually off limits to celiacs! How exciting! The most exciting option is the lo mein! You can order the lo mein (prepared using rice noodles) with chicken, shrimp, a combo, or, for the vegetarians, just vegetables or with tofu!
Another great option is the tempura shrimp meal. Sadly, Yak and Yeti has no gluten free tempura batter (a girl can dream!), but the chef can grill the shrimp! I know, it sounds a little boring, but I love the presentation! The dish is served with a chili plum sauce for dipping which is delicious! Also, stir-fried vegetables and brown rice make this a very satisfying meal!
Finally... the sweet stuff! Yak and Yeti serves a really amazing gluten free cheesecake! The cheesecake is drizzled with strawberry and mango sauces which go perfectly with the creamy, vanilla taste of the cheesecake. The cheesecake is baked with a nut crust! A really awesome gluten free dessert that you cannot find just anywhere!
If you are in the mood for a lighter, cooling dessert before you go back into the hot Florida sun, the sorbet trio is perfect! I love the fruity flavors in this trio: raspberry, lemon, and mango. They are simple and smooth sorbets that I would definitely order again!
For a gluten free eater, finding safe Chinese food can be really tough! But, Yak and Yeti makes dining gluten free very easy and enjoyable! Yak and Yeti is a great option for a lunch or dinner in Animal Kingdom that will satisfy those unavoidable Chinese food cravings!
